Synopsis

Yulu’s coal is a story shared by the Adnyamathanha people of the Flinders Ranges. This film clip is one of eight accompanying the second series of Sharing Our Stories books and audio CD . Yulu’s Coal tells the story of Yulu the Kingfisher man who travelled to Ilkura – The Gathering Place (Wilpena Pound) to conduct an initiation ceremony. The embers of the sacred fires he lit as he travelled left behind the coal deposits mined by Leigh Creek Coal.

THE LAST MAGICIAN

A clash of cultures in Papua New Guinea played out by three chiefs, with opposing views. William believes the people of Papua New Guinea should go back to a traditional way of life and forget hospitals, roads and modern development.  Meanwhile, John K sees nothing wrong in exploiting natural resources. Chief Nalubatau is dying and does not know if his spirit will go to Catholic heaven or Tuma, the traditional place of the dead. Confusion reigns.
