Synopsis

A clash of cultures in Papua New Guinea is explored through the lives, perspectives and friendship of three important chiefs, with differing views. Bougainvillean Elder and Chief of the Flying Fox clan, William Takaku wants the people of Papua New Guinea to return to a traditional way of life, forgetting about hospitals, roads and modern development.   John Kasaipwalova, Chief on Kiriwina in the Trobriand islands argues that commercialising natural resources and modernisation are essential to survival. Against this backdrop, Johns’ father, Chief Nalubatau, is approaching death and is deeply confused as to whether his spirit will go to Catholic heaven or Tuma, the traditional place of the dead.

Awards : Nominated for Best Direction & Best Documentary – AFI Awards.

‘This study of a society in transition, is quite simply stunning.’  The Independent.
