Synopsis

The Ngaanyatjarra of the Gibson Desert was written in collaboration with Ngaanyatjarra community members living in Warburton in Western Australia. Ngaanyatjarra people have lived in the Warburton region for many thousands of years, maintaining a strong connection, both spiritual and physical, to the land and to each other. However, with the arrival of Europeans on Ngaanyatjarra Country the way of life for the Ngaanyatjarra community changed significantly. Through a montage of text, photographs, diary extracts and quotes this book explores how in 1973 the Ngaanyatjarra people regained control of their traditional lands and how today, organisations such as the Ngaanyatjarra Council and the Warburton Arts project work to manage local interests, and strengthen capacity for cultural continuity.
