Synopsis

The Dani of Irian Jaya shares an account of the changes affecting the Dani people. For thousands of years the Dani have lived in the Central Highlands of West Papua, in a valley covered with a patchwork of terraced gardens, sometimes built on slopes so steep crops are tended by women suspended from vine ropes. Over several decades now, the combined influences of Indonesian government policies, transmigration and resource exploitation, missionaries and a rapidly expanding tourist industry have had a significant impact on traditional Dani culture. Through a montage of text and photographs, diary extracts and quotes this book explores Dani cultural heritage and the impact of Indonesian rule.
